Tips for Time Management in Law School & Winter Trends

Kayla is a deputy prosecuting attorney in Elkhart County, Indiana.  Her husband works as public defender in the same county, which she thinks is pretty funny.  Kayla was born and raised in Elkhart county, then went on to graduate from Purdue University.  Kayla then went to  Valparaiso University School of law and graduated in 2018.  In her spare time she loves to read, binge Netflix and is a member of a Crossfit gym.  She’s also obsessed with her goldendoodle, Bella!

The biggest mistake I made my first year of law school (besides waiting until the last minute to study for my first-ever Contracts final) was assuming that law school would be anything like undergraduate. I assumed I would be able to maintain the same social life I had at Purdue while still maintaining good grades. For many of us, until law school, getting good grades probably came fairly easy. I wasn’t used to struggling academically. But then, my Property professor introduced me to the Rule against Perpetuities. And honestly, even though I passed the bar exam, I still don’t understand it at all.

As law school went on, I got my groove back. The best advice I can give is to get a planner (I love my Erin Condren one), plan your days out, and STICK TO IT. Put your “me time” in your planner and don’t let yourself cancel it. Set aside time each night to read for your classes, of course, but make sure to pencil in some time for yourself as well. Self-care is so important, and if you’re stressed out constantly, you simply will not perform to the best of your ability. Exercise was a huge component of my success in law school, I’m sure of it. Make sure to schedule time for working out, going to a yoga class, or anything that helps you relieve stress, and STICK TO IT.

The second rule I stuck to in law school was giving myself a “stop time.” Every night, at 9:00PM, I closed the books and opened Netflix. Of course, there were exceptions – if I had exams coming up or a paper due, I obviously had to push past 9:00. But, for the most part, I let myself relax come 9:00. It was hard, and most of the time I felt really guilty doing it. Even though The Office was playing in the background, I wasn’t paying attention – I was thinking about how many of my classmates were probably still up studying. Eventually, that stopped bothering me. I can only worry about myself. To me, self-care and me time was as important as my grades. So, plan that manicure, binge that show, and relax – if I can pass the bar, trust me, so can you.
